Genetic and molecular epidemiology studies for cancer prevention
Summary
Dr Victor Moreno’s research area is cancer prevention, with a special interest in colorectal cancer (CRC). Using the bioinformatics tools to study genetic and molecular epidemiology, the group is aiming to identify biomarkers and develop risk models useful for population stratification strategies that should lead to improved screening and therapeutics. For this purpose, patient’s data and samples are analyzed in case-control studies and clinical cohorts. The whole-genome expression data, SNPs, CNVs, mosaicism, methylation, miRNAs and somatic mutations from exome sequencing are being assessed. Dr Victor Moreno’s group has designed and conducted several big case-control studies such as MCC-Spain (CIBEResp) and COLONOMICS (www.colonomics.org). This has generated relevant outputs about CRC carcinogenesis and its environmental and genetic risk factors, empowering the group’s further research in recent wide national (COLSCREEN, CRIPREV) and international studies (Motricolor H2020, FIGI R01). Additionally, the role of genes in diverse pathways and in disease susceptibility is being analyzed, either with a candidate gene approach, or contributing to the validation of GWAS hits within international consortia GECCO/CORECT (US) and EUCONGENE (EU). The long follow-up of the case-series and well annotated clinical data has allowed further studies of prognostic biomarkers based on the molecular expression profiles.
